When we started Ibha, one of the things that struck us was how difficult it was for families to evaluate elder care services. The industry had no standard certifications, no universal quality benchmarks, and significant information asymmetry — the provider knew far more about their service than the family could easily discover.

That asymmetry can be dangerous. An inadequate or dishonest care service puts vulnerable people at risk.

Here are twelve questions that will cut through the marketing and tell you whether a service is actually trustworthy.

1. How do you hire and vet your care managers?

A good answer includes: police background checks, verification of education credentials, reference checks from prior employers, in-person interviews, and some form of practical assessment. Be wary of services that outsource hiring or use a large network of informal contractors without centralised vetting.

2. What training do care managers receive?

Look for: structured onboarding training (not just shadowing), geriatric care modules, emergency response protocols, and ongoing training. Ask how many hours of training a care manager completes before their first solo visit.

3. What happens if my assigned care manager is sick or unavailable?

Every service will have absences. A robust answer describes a formal backup system — a trained substitute who is briefed on your parent's specific needs, not just whoever is available that day.

4. How do you handle a medical emergency?

This is a critical question. The answer should be specific: who is contacted first, what the escalation chain looks like, how quickly they can reach a hospital, whether they stay with your parent through the emergency. Vague answers ("we coordinate with healthcare providers") are a red flag.

5. What does a care visit actually include?

Ask for a written description of a standard visit. It should be more than a checklist. Good care is attentive and responsive — but there should also be clear minimum standards for every visit.

6. How do you communicate updates to the family?

Look for: a dedicated family app or portal, written visit reports after every visit, photo documentation (with consent), and clear protocols for urgent communication. If the answer is "we'll WhatsApp you," probe further.

7. Can I speak with current clients?

Any reputable service should be able to connect you with families willing to share their experience. If references are unavailable or heavily curated, treat this as a yellow flag.

8. What are your contract terms — and what is the cancellation policy?

Look for: month-to-month flexibility, clear terms about notice periods, and no lock-in contracts. A service confident in its quality doesn't need to trap clients.

9. How is pricing structured — and what's not included?

Ask specifically about: setup fees, emergency call-out fees, charges for accompanying to appointments, holiday surcharges. A transparent service will have a clear, written price list with no hidden extras.

10. Are your care managers employees or contractors?

Employees are generally more accountable — the company is responsible for their conduct, pays their benefits, and can train and discipline them. Independent contractors can be harder to manage consistently. Neither is inherently disqualifying, but understand what you're getting.

11. How do you handle complaints or dissatisfaction?

The quality of a complaint resolution process reveals a lot about a company's values. Look for: a named contact for escalations, a clear timeline for response, and evidence that feedback leads to change.

12. What is your experience with situations like ours?

Your parent's situation is specific — their health conditions, personality, home environment, family dynamics. Ask whether the service has experience with similar situations. A good provider will be honest about where they excel and where they have limitations.

No service is perfect. But the best services are honest about their imperfections and have systems in place to continuously improve. The answers to these twelve questions will tell you everything you need to know.
